State-owned retailer PT Sarinah has announced it will construct a 40-story building next to its original building, which was constructed in the 1960s and was country's first high-rise shopping center, to strengthen the brand image of the retailer.

Sarinah president director GNP Sugiarta Yasa said in Jakarta recently that the new building would house premium restaurants and offices, besides display various high-end products.

“We will defend the old building because it is the premises of a historical retail business. We could simply change its interior, since the Sarinah building is part of our heritage. I hope it will be Indonesia’s Harrods,” he said as quoted by Antara news agency, referring to the retailer in London.

Construction of the Sarinah building, which is located on Jl. MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta, started in 1963. Founding president Sukarno officiated at the opening of the building as a retail center in 1967.

The store sells creative products like batik, woven fabric and various handicrafts from across the country. The building also hosts various culinary outlets.

Sugiarta said the groundbreaking ceremony for the new building would be held in March. (bbn)
