Singapore-based food chain SaladStop! has reportedly committed to using exclusively cage-free eggs in its supply chain by 2025 as part of its participation in the global cage-free movement.

According to a statement, the policy applies to all its locations, including Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea, Japan and Spain.

“Our motto ‘Eat Wide Awake’ means taking into consideration the environment, animal welfare and the food chain when sourcing our ingredients. We hope to be one of the catalysts in changing the food system for the better and support a new breed of farms committed to positive change," said SaladStop! director Katherine Braha in a statement, adding that the family-owned company is partnering with global animal protection organization Humane Society International (HSI) to source the cage-free eggs.

Cage-free systems are said to offer commercially viable production methods that generally offer higher animal welfare compared to caged systems, allowing the hens to walk, stretch their wings and lay eggs in nests.

Other Asian companies that have committed to similar pledge include Grand Hyatt Singapore, AccorHotels, Sodexo, Unilever,The Lo & Behold Group, Compass Group and Andaz Singapore. (kes)
